An international team of marine archaeologists has made one of the most significant historical discoveries in decades: a previously unknown Roman city lying beneath the Mediterranean Sea, approximately 12 kilometers off the coast of Sicily.
The settlement, which researchers have tentatively named Portus Novus, appears to have been a thriving trading port during the late Roman Republic period, roughly between 100 BC and 50 BC.
