Man Dies Following Serious Crash on East Lancashire Road as Police Launch Investigation

A man has died following a serious collision involving a motorcycle and a lorry on the East Lancashire Road in Haydock, prompting a major police investigation.

The fatal crash occurred at approximately 11pm on Monday, June 8, on the westbound carriageway between Penny Lane and Kenyons Lane South. Emergency services attended the scene, and a section of the busy route remained closed for several hours while investigations were carried out.

Merseyside Police confirmed that the victim, a motorcyclist in his 40s, was pronounced dead at the scene. His family has been informed, and specially trained officers are providing support during this difficult time.

Investigators believe two lorries were involved in the incident. Police said one lorry is understood to have been directly involved in the collision with the motorcycle, while a second lorry may have been indirectly connected to the circumstances leading up to the crash.

As part of ongoing enquiries, officers have arrested two men. A 28-year-old man from the Widnes area was arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless or inconsiderate driving, driving while unfit through drugs, and driving with a controlled drug above the legal limit.

A second man, aged 38 and from Carmarthenshire, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless or inconsiderate driving and driving while unfit through drugs. Both individuals remain in police custody as investigations continue.

The collision caused significant disruption for motorists, with traffic brought to a standstill for several hours overnight. Witnesses reported seeing a large emergency response at the scene, including the arrival of an air ambulance.

One motorist described the aftermath as severe, saying emergency crews worked extensively at the scene while police managed the road closure and traffic queues.

The westbound carriageway of the East Lancashire Road remained partially closed into the following morning as specialist collision investigators conducted forensic examinations and gathered evidence.
