A powerful nor’easter is continuing to affect the U.S. Northeast, bringing heavy rain, strong winds and coastal flooding from New Jersey through New England.
Coastal communities in New Jersey, New York and southern New England have experienced repeated flooding as high tides and storm surge push water into low-lying neighborhoods. The slow-moving storm has also brought strong winds capable of damaging trees and utility infrastructure.
More than 100,000 electricity customers were without power across the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic at points during Sunday, while numerous flights were canceled or delayed. Boston Logan International Airport reported more than 250 cancellations by late Sunday morning as strong winds affected the region.
The storm has also caused a fatality. A 56-year-old New York City Housing Authority worker was killed by a falling tree in Brooklyn on Saturday, according to authorities.
The National Weather Service said coastal flooding could continue through additional high-tide cycles as the storm gradually weakens. Residents in affected coastal areas have been urged to remain cautious around flooded roads, strong surf and downed power lines.
The nor’easter is expected to gradually move away from the coast, but flooding, strong winds and travel disruptions remain concerns across parts of the Northeast.
