Season Featuring Classic and Contemporary Productions

The Royal Lyceum Theatre Edinburgh has announced its highly anticipated 2026/27 season, offering audiences a diverse programme of acclaimed classics, contemporary adaptations, major co-productions, family favourites and live entertainment.

The new season will begin on October 2, 2026, with The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, a National Theatre of Scotland production presented in partnership with The Royal Lyceum Theatre Edinburgh and Pitlochry Festival Theatre. Adapted by renowned playwright David Harrower and directed by Vicky Featherstone, the production will feature acclaimed actor Gayle Rankin in the iconic role of Edinburgh schoolteacher Miss Jean Brodie.

Following the opening production, audiences will be treated to a fresh adaptation of George Orwell’s 1984. Adapted by Chris Hannan, the production is a collaboration between The Lyceum, Citizens Theatre and Dundee Rep Theatre, bringing a modern perspective to Orwell’s enduring dystopian classic.

The theatre’s popular festive tradition will continue with the return of A Christmas Carol from November 28. Directed by James Brining and adapted by Deborah McAndrew, the beloved holiday production will once again form a central part of the Lyceum’s Christmas programme.

Shakespeare’s timeless tragedy Romeo and Juliet will take to the stage from January 30 to February 27, 2027. Directed by Chelsea Walker, the production is a major co-production involving English Touring Theatre, Leeds Playhouse and Nottingham Playhouse.

One of the season’s major highlights will be a new staging of the award-winning musical Guys & Dolls. Opening in Edinburgh on March 26, the production will run until May 1 before embarking on a tour across Scotland, including performances in Aberdeen, Inverness, Glasgow and Dundee.

The season will conclude with a new adaptation of Bertolt Brecht’s celebrated anti-war drama Mother Courage and Her Children. Written and directed by acclaimed playwright Zinnie Harris, the production will run from May 28 to June 19, 2027.

In addition to its in-house productions, The Lyceum will host a range of visiting performances throughout the year. Family audiences can enjoy popular stage adaptations of Zog and The Gruffalo, while theatre lovers can look forward to productions including Private Peaceful, The Haunting of Hill House, and the return of Emma Rice’s acclaimed Tristan & Yseult.
